Under the banner ‘Two Towns, One Spirit,’ a packed crowd of 1,900 spectators gathered at Lahainaluna’s Sue D. Cooley Stadium to watch a high school football showdown that felt larger than the scoreboard.
A Night of Unity
Lahaina, still reeling from the August 2023 inferno that claimed 102 lives and razed thousands of structures, saw its high school team take the field alongside Paradise, a community that endured a 2018 fire that killed 85 residents and burned over 153,000 acres, leaving the town largely abandoned.
The match, billed as the Unity Bowl, ended with Lahainaluna edging out Paradise 27-21, marking the first victory of the season for the visiting team and highlighting the perseverance of players who had lost their homes.
Maui Interscholastic League officials and Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono were present, meeting with Paradise’s captains and co‑principals and underscoring the event’s role as a symbol of communal healing.
Beyond the final whistle, the game served as a reminder that sport can stitch together narratives of loss, hope and shared identity, as the two towns demonstrated a collective spirit that refuses to be silenced by tragedy.
