Lamar University’s baseball team captured the Southland Conference tournament championship on Sunday, ending a 16‑year title drought with a 2‑1 victory over McNeese State.
The win was anchored by a stellar outing from Chris Olivier, the conference’s Pitcher of the Year, who tossed eight strong innings, limiting the opposition to a single run while striking out key batters.
Lamar struck first in the second inning when A.J. Taylor delivered an RBI single that put the Cardinals on the board.
McNeese answered in the fifth, tying the game with an infield single by Marcus Heusohn that scored a run.
The decisive blow came in the bottom of the sixth, when Lamar added the game‑winning run, sealing the championship.
A milestone for the program
Coach Will Davis praised the team’s resilience throughout the season, noting how the squad rallied after early setbacks to stay competitive.
With the title secured, the Cardinals will now await the NCAA tournament bracket, which is slated for release on Monday.
