Lance Hoeltke Takes the Helm at Booker High School Football Program

Former USF quarterback aims to blend academic rigor with athletic success as new head coach

On July 29, Booker High School officially named Lance Hoeltke as its new football coach, marking the end of a brief but turbulent tenure for Carlos Woods, who was dismissed on July 16 after a 12‑2 first season and an ongoing investigation by Sarasota County Schools.

A Coach With a Championship pedigree

Hoeltke arrives with a résumé that includes quarterbacking the University of South Florida’s 1997 team, earning a Bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA from USF, and coaching stints at Christian Academy of Louisville and Kentucky Country Day School. At Louisville, he helped the program capture Kentucky Class 2A state championships in 2016 and 2018, and at Kentucky Country Day he contributed to a Class 1A state championship game appearance in 2020.

Principal Jamal Crook voiced strong support for Hoeltke’s vision, emphasizing that the new coach’s focus on academic excellence and character development aligns with the school’s broader goals. ‘We’re excited to have a leader who understands that success on the field starts with success in the classroom,’ Crook said in a statement.

Building on Recent Momentum

The Tornadoes have reached a state semifinal each of the past three seasons, a testament to the program’s resilience. However, the transition has been marked by player turnover, with 21 athletes transferring after Woods’ departure. Hoeltke plans to use the first week of August to begin practice, aiming to instill his system before the season opener on Friday, August 21, when Booker will host four‑time champion Venice.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, Hoeltke stresses the importance of building a culture that values discipline, teamwork, and community involvement. He hopes that by coupling competitive play with a strong educational foundation, the program can continue its upward trajectory while preparing its athletes for life beyond high school.
