A Comeback Built on Resilience
Landon Mack, a right‑handed pitcher who last season helped the University of Tennessee’s baseball program, is slated to return for the 2027 campaign after a year marred by injury. His return comes following a transfer from Rutgers, where he had already drawn attention for his performance on the mound.
In his freshman year at Rutgers, Mack posted a 6‑5 record with a 4.03 ERA over 80.1 innings, striking out 70 batters while earning Big Ten All‑Freshman Team honors. The outing earned him recognition as the best freshman pitcher in the conference and a spot on the All‑Big Ten Freshman Team.
During his solitary season with the Volunteers, Mack compiled a 4‑4 record and a 4.67 ERA across 61.2 innings, allowing 32 earned runs on 67 hits, issuing 25 walks, and recording 77 strikeouts. The numbers reflected a promising start before an arm soreness forced him to miss the final two regular‑season starts, the SEC Tournament, and the Chapel Hill Regional.
Coach Josh Elander has been clear that Mack’s participation will be evaluated on a day‑to‑day basis, emphasizing that health will dictate the timeline of his comeback. "We’ll move him forward only when he’s fully ready," Elander said, underscoring the cautious approach the staff is taking.
Mack’s commitment to Tennessee was secured over LSU last June while he was a member of the 2025 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The decision highlighted his high school pedigree, having been named the top New Jersey prospect from Bishop Eustace High School and ranked No. 388 overall in the Class of 2024 by Perfect Game.
Beyond his collegiate stats, Mack’s reputation as a strikeout artist and his experience on the national stage position him as a key piece for Tennessee’s rotation. If he stays healthy, the right‑hander is expected to anchor the staff and help the Volunteers contend for a national title in the upcoming season.
