Springfield has named Lane Murphy as its new boys basketball coach, tapping a familiar face who grew up just a short drive from the town's gymnasium.
Murphy, a former guard at East Robertson and longtime assistant at Liberty Creek, said the move feels like a homecoming, citing the county's basketball heritage and his desire to give back to the community that shaped him.
A Family Legacy Takes Center Court
He will be joined on the bench by his father, Neil Murphy, a coaching legend who amassed more than 300 wins and three district titles during a 22‑year stretch at East Robertson, adding a wealth of experience to the staff.
The hiring comes on the heels of a breakthrough season for the Yellow Jackets, who posted a 17‑13 record and secured a Region 5‑3A quarterfinal berth — the program's strongest campaign since the 2019 campaign.
For Lane Murphy, the appointment marks his first head‑coaching role at the high school level, a milestone he embraces with optimism and a clear vision for building on the foundation laid by his predecessors.
