Laredo sent three football squads to the Texas 7‑on‑7 state tournament this year, marking the second consecutive season the city has qualified a full trio of teams for the event.
Among them, United High School’s Longhorns made the deepest push, advancing to the quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual champion San Antonio Johnson.
Quarterfinal Showdown
Facing San Antonio Johnson in the quarterfinals, United High School’s offense fought hard but could not overcome the opposition’s defense, ending their run with a respectable showing.
LBJ and Nixon High Schools each finished winless at 0‑4, battling tough pools that included matches against Allen, Cypress Fairbanks and Austin Westlake for Nixon, while LBJ fell to Round Rock Cedar Ridge, Katy Freeman and Argyle Liberty Christian.
The tournament also underscored the dominance of traditional powerhouses, with Allen High School boasting five state titles since 2008 and a streak of 16 straight district championships, while Austin Westlake secured three straight crowns from 2019 to 2021.
Despite the mixed results, the participation highlights Laredo’s growing presence on the statewide stage and sets the stage for future competition.
