Tennessee State University announced this week that former star wide receiver Larry Dorsey will be enshrined in its Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, a tribute that underscores a career that still resonates in the program’s history.
A Career of Firsts
During his four seasons from 1972 to 1975, Dorsey became a cornerstone of the Tigers’ offense, topping the team in scoring in 1973 with 13 touchdowns and finishing fifth all‑time with 26 career receiving touchdowns.
His excellence earned him All‑America recognition from a suite of prestigious outlets — including the Pittsburgh Courier, Associated Press, United Press International, Sporting News and Time Magazine — in the final year of his collegiate eligibility.
Beyond the college accolades, Dorsey’s talent translated to the professional ranks, where the San Diego Chargers selected him in the third round of the 1976 NFL Draft. He spent two productive seasons with the Chargers before concluding his pro journey with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The upcoming induction will place Dorsey alongside other legends, reinforcing the university’s commitment to honoring athletes who have left an indelible mark both on and off the field.
Legacy Beyond the Numbers
John Merritt, a longtime mentor and coach at Tennessee State, praised Dorsey’s work ethic and playmaking ability, noting that his contributions helped shape the program’s identity during a pivotal era.
Fans and alumni alike anticipate the ceremony, seeing it as a chance to celebrate a figure whose influence extends beyond statistics, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence.
