Layla Jakins Commits to Miami University Soccer Ahead of 2026 Season

The incoming defender brings experience from Colorado State and a family legacy to the RedHawks

Miami University Soccer has confirmed the addition of Layla Jakins, a 5‑foot‑11 defender from San Luis Obispo, California, who will join the RedHawks ahead of the 2026 season. Jakins comes to Oxford after a productive period at Colorado State University, where she appeared in 11 matches and logged 142 minutes of play.

A Strategic Recruit

Head coach Courtney Sirmans emphasized Jakins’s work ethic, talent and winning mentality, noting that her arrival is expected to strengthen the back line immediately. "We are excited to bring a player of her caliber into our program," Sirmans said in the announcement.

The RedHawks will test new talent in an exhibition match against Purdue Fort Wayne on August 8 before opening the regular season at Xavier on August 16. These early fixtures will give Jakins a chance to adapt to the collegiate pace and integrate with the existing squad.

Jakins’s high school career was marked by durability and versatility. She recorded two goals and three assists in 37 varsity appearances and earned recognition as a CIF Scholar Athlete. Additionally, she maintained a four‑year honor roll status, underscoring her commitment to academics.

Beyond college, Jakins’s father, Tahj, pursued a professional career in Major League Soccer, playing for franchises in Colorado and Kansas City. His experience adds a familial dimension to her soccer background and has likely influenced her approach to the game.

Miami University’s soccer program continues to build on its recent successes, drawing talent from diverse geographic regions. Jakins’s addition reflects the team’s strategy of recruiting players who combine athletic prowess with strong personal character.
