The Le Moyne College women's soccer team opened its season with a tightly contested loss, slipping to a 2‑1 defeat against Iona at Ted Grant Field.
A Tough Start on Home Turf
The match began with a flurry of activity, as freshman midfielder Callie Gillen tested the Iona defense with a shot on target in the 30th minute, while Alivia Day earned a caution in the 17th that foreshadowed a later dismissal.
Iona broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Daija Jones and Dolene Smith combined for an assist that left the Dolphins a player short after Day's second yellow card turned into a red, reducing Le Moyne to ten.
Emma Sousa's free‑kick in the closing stages brought Le Moyne level, but Iona answered moments later to clinch a 2‑1 victory.
Goalkeeper Mikayla McPheron, a junior, faced 13 shots and made five key saves, keeping the Dolphins competitive despite the numerical disadvantage.
The result leaves Le Moyne at 0‑2‑0, while the team prepares to host Niagara University on Thursday, August 20, at the same venue.
