A Punitive Blow to the Titans
The Colorado High School Activities Association announced that Legend High School’s head coach Jake Heaps will miss the first two games of the 2026 season, a penalty that could dramatically alter the Titans’ campaign. The suspension is part of a broader sanctions package that also places the program on probation through the end of the year.
Heaps’ punishment follows a series of violations that include improper recruiting contacts, breaches of preseason practice rules, and a prior infraction involving assistant coach Michael Norton, who reached out to non‑prospective students on social media. The association determined that Legend ran padded practices during the Heat Acclimatization Period from August 3 to 8, a clear safety violation.
While neighboring programs such as Chatfield and Vista Ridge received probation without game restrictions, Legend faced a harsher sanction, reflecting the association’s intent to set a precedent for repeated infractions. The penalty also strips the Titans of any postseason coaching privileges; if the Board of Directors does not lift the restriction, Heaps will be barred from playoff games, forcing the school to appoint an interim leader for the critical stretch.
A Coach with a Proven Track Record
Jake Heaps, a former college and professional quarterback known for mentoring NFL talent like Russell Wilson, guided Legend to a 10‑2 record in 2025, culminating in a Class 5A state runner‑up finish. The administration is already petitioning to shorten the year‑long restriction, but the CHSAA has signaled that the penalty will remain unless new evidence emerges.
Heaps will become eligible to return on September 10 for the Titans’ matchup against Cherry Creek, a date that could mark the beginning of a recovery effort. The coming weeks will test both the team’s resilience and the association’s willingness to reconsider the sanctions in light of the program’s recent successes.
