The baseball community mourns the loss of Jim Toman, a revered figure whose 35‑year tenure in NCAA Division I baseball ended on August 4 when he succumbed to glioblastoma at the age of 64.
Toman’s career was marked by stints at North Carolina State, the University of South Carolina, Liberty University, and Middle Tennessee State University, where he accumulated more than 400 wins and earned a reputation as a master recruiter and mentor.
A native of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, he excelled in both baseball and football at the high school level before starring as a catcher for North Carolina State, where his senior and junior seasons culminated in team captaincies and four consecutive winning campaigns.
A career defined by perseverance
After brief coaching stops at Richmond County High School and Florida International University, Toman returned to North Carolina State as an assistant under Ray Tanner before embarking on an 11‑year tenure at the University of South Carolina, where he recruited top‑25 classes in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
In 2008 he took the helm at Liberty University, guiding the program for nine seasons, and later served as an assistant at the College of Charleston and as head coach at Middle Tennessee State from 2018 through 2022, always leaving a imprint of discipline and enthusiasm.
His contributions were recognized in 2002 when the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America named him National Assistant Coach of the Year, a testament to his influence on the sport’s brightest talents.
Beyond the win‑loss column, Toman was remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his infectious passion for baseball, and the countless lives he shaped as a coach, mentor and friend.
In lieu of flowers, his family asked that donations be directed to the National Brain Tumor Society, underscoring the personal cause that motivated his public legacy.
