A Legacy on the Field
The soccer world mourned the loss of Ron Eden, a legendary coach at Brentwood High School, who died at the age of 72. Over a career spanning decades, Eden transformed the Bruins into one of the most competitive programs on Long Island, shaping generations of student‑athletes and leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Eden’s trophy cabinet tells a story of sustained excellence. He guided the Bruins to 17 league titles, 11 Suffolk championships and 10 Long Island crowns, and his teams captured state titles in 2008, 2010, 2019 and 2023. His career record of 484‑70‑32 placed him second only to Robert Muir in Suffolk County history, a testament to his consistency and dedication.
The accolades extended beyond the pitch. Eden was named United Soccer Coaches’ National High School Coach of the Year in 2023 and earned New York Coach of the Year honors in 2005, 2013 and 2023. That same year he was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, cementing his place among the region’s sporting greats.
Colleagues and players remember him not just for wins but for the values he instilled. Joel Iglesias, an assistant coach at Brentwood, described Eden as a mentor and friend who led group prayers before games, emphasizing teamwork and community. Section XI executive director Tom Combs called him a "class act" and a good friend, while Commack coach Dave Moran likened facing Eden’s teams to a "World Cup Final."
Eden’s influence reached beyond the sidelines. He played professionally from 1976 to 1981 with the New York Apollo and New York United, bringing a player’s perspective to his coaching. His legacy lives on in the countless athletes who credit him with shaping their character and love for the game.
