A Fundraiser with a Purpose
On August 14, the Oahe Hockey Association will host a fundraiser in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, aimed at completing the renovation of the Ice Barn, a year‑round hockey facility that serves thousands of young athletes each season.
The evening will feature Brian Rafalski, a three‑time Stanley Cup champion and U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer, alongside Carter Sanderson, the first player from South Dakota to be drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will share their personal journeys and the role community support has played in their development.
Building a Future for Youth Hockey
Organizers say the event celebrates the progress of the Capitalize on the Future Campaign, which has already secured more than $3.1 million toward upgrading the Ice Barn with expanded locker rooms, new concession areas, spectator seating, fire‑suppression improvements and additional operational spaces.
Rafalski recalled the hospitality his program received during the COVID‑19 pandemic, emphasizing how the local community’s generosity has been a model for sustaining youth sports across the region.
Sanderson, who credits year‑round access to the Ice Barn for his own growth, believes the upgraded venue will create new opportunities for aspiring players and help host tournaments, figure‑skating exhibitions and other community events.
Tickets are priced at $50 per person or $350 for a table of eight, with business‑casual attire required, offering fans a chance to contribute directly to the final phase of the facility’s improvements.
