Lehigh Valley's New Arena Soccer Team Takes the Field
The region is set to welcome a fresh professional arena soccer franchise called the Spirits, slated to begin play at the PPL Center in roughly six months. The team's name pays tribute to the area's celebrated Lehigh Valley Phantoms hockey franchise, linking the new club to a legacy of community pride.
Co‑owners Rob Brooks and his brother Jim Brooks, alongside Sporting Director Guliano Oliviero and Assistant Head Coach Jeremy Ortiz, unveiled the franchise at a public event, emphasizing a vision that blends competitive ambition with deep local roots. Their plan includes free clinics and youth camps designed to grow the sport across the valley.
Building on a Hockey Legacy
The Spirits organization cites the Phantoms' success as a blueprint for community engagement and fan connection. By drawing on the Phantoms' strong regional following, the soccer team hopes to translate that enthusiasm to the indoor arena.
Guliano Oliviero, a Wisconsin native recently inducted into the state's soccer Hall of Fame, brings extensive playing and administrative experience. He will be supported by William Banahene, who joins as incoming Sporting Director, and Jeremy Ortiz, fresh from a championship campaign, who will serve as associate head coach.
Inaugural Season and Community Outreach
The franchise's first MASL season is scheduled to open on December 5, marking the start of a campaign that will also feature participation in the league's inaugural Expansion Draft. That draft will allow the Spirits to assemble a roster by selecting from a pool of available players, setting the stage for competitive debut.
Beyond the on‑court action, the team promises to host free clinics and camps for local youth, aiming to nurture talent and foster a love for soccer throughout the region. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to using sport as a vehicle for community development.
