Lely High School in Southwest Florida announced the dismissal of its first-year head football coach, Dan Nieboer, after a winless start that included a 166-0 loss in the opening three games. The coach, hired in March from Jason Witten’s Liberty Christian program in Texas, struggled with player transfers and a lack of cohesion, contributing to the early defeats.
Leadership Transition at Lely High School
The program had enjoyed a turnaround just a year earlier under former coach Ben Hammer, whose three-season tenure produced a 20-14 record, multiple playoff appearances and an offense that averaged 471.2 yards and 45 points per game. The 2025 season concluded with an 8-4 finish and a regional semifinal appearance before a loss to Miami Central.
With the season still underway, assistant coaches Carlos Cornelio and Kit Fowler have been named co-interim head coaches, taking over the program for the remainder of the 2026 season while the school conducts a nationwide search for a permanent replacement. Their appointment underscores a focus on player development and a positive team culture.
The decision reflects broader leadership concerns at Lely, where the abrupt departure follows a pattern of turnover that has challenged the program’s stability. School officials, including Jennifer Bledsoe, communicated the change, emphasizing the need for continuity and a culture that supports athlete growth.
The upcoming search aims to bring in a coach who can rebuild confidence, nurture a positive team culture and develop players both on and off the field, signaling a renewed commitment to long‑term success.
