A community mourns the loss of a rising football star
Levi Wyatt, a 23‑year‑old former Jackson State defensive back and native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, died in a motor‑vehicle collision late Friday night in Jackson.
According to Capitol Police, the crash occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. at the intersection of North State Street and Belhaven Street, a busy crossroads in the city’s downtown area.
Wyatt’s football journey began at Vicksburg High School, continued at Holmes County Central, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and then McNeese State, where he earned second‑team All‑Southland Conference honors in 2024. He transferred to Jackson State in 2025 and played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ sweep of the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division, contributing 12 tackles on defense and special‑teams duties.
The Jackson State football program issued a heartfelt statement, referring to Wyatt as a brother and teammate, and urging the Tiger Nation to pray for his family during this difficult time.
Friends, coaches and fellow players have taken to social media to share memories of Wyatt’s work ethic, humility and the impact he made on and off the field, underscoring a legacy that extends beyond statistics.
