A Promising Career Cut Short
Levi Wyatt, a 23‑year‑old former McNeese State defensive back, was killed early Saturday morning in a single‑vehicle crash on a highway outside Jackson, Mississippi. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances that led to the collision.
Wyatt spent two seasons with the Cowboys, emerging as a reliable presence in the secondary. As a sophomore he started all 10 games, tallying 13 tackles and seven pass breakups, and as a junior he posted 33 tackles, two tackles for loss and forced eight pass breakups, earning second‑team All‑Southland Conference honors.
After completing his college eligibility, Wyatt transferred to Jackson State University, where he hoped to continue his development and contribute to the program’s resurgence. Coaches praised his work ethic and leadership both on and off the field.
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from teammates, former coaches and fans who remember his tenacity and the impact he made in a short time. A memorial service is being planned at McNeese State, where a moment of silence will be observed before the next home game.
Wyatt’s story underscores the fragile nature of life and the enduring legacy of student‑athletes whose contributions extend beyond statistics. His family, friends and the broader football community mourn the loss of a young man whose future was just beginning to unfold.
