Trailblazers Hockey Makes Its Debut
Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) is set to field its first men’s hockey team this September, opening the season against McKendree University on September 18 at the East Alton Ice Arena.
The home opener will tip off at 7:15 p.m., featuring a festive atmosphere with mascot Blazer the Newfie, giveaways and booths that showcase both athletics and academic programs. Admission to every home match is free, inviting the community to experience the sport without a ticket price barrier.
Coach Tyler Elbrecht expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, highlighting the players’ preparation and the college’s commitment to competitive ACHA hockey.
The program is designed to let athletes earn a two‑year degree while competing, offering a low‑cost pathway that helps students avoid accumulating debt before they transfer to four‑year institutions.
Freshman goalie Barron Arbeiter noted that the affordability of the arrangement is a major draw, saying the opportunity to play college hockey without financial strain attracts many newcomers.
Beyond the ice, the team integrates academic support and community outreach, reinforcing LCCC’s mission to blend education with athletic development.
