A New Era for Lexington Basketball
Lexington Senior High School has announced the hiring of Corey Thompson as its new head coach of the varsity men’s basketball team, a move that underscores the school’s ambition to rebuild a program with a winning tradition.
Thompson arrives after a distinguished playing career at Winston‑Salem State University, where he was a four‑year letterman, participated in four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1998 to 2002, and contributed to back‑to‑back CIAA championships as a student‑athlete.
His coaching résumé includes an eight‑year tenure at St. Pauls High School, during which the boys’ varsity squad captured consecutive conference titles and secured eight straight state playoff berths, highlighted by a second‑round advancement after defeating the reigning state champions in his inaugural season.
In the summer of 2024, Thompson also stepped into the role of tenth head coach of the Winston‑Salem State men’s basketball program, further cementing his reputation as a developer of talent and a strategic leader.
Benjamin Robinson, the school’s Athletic Director, praised Thompson’s blend of experience and commitment, stating that his vision aligns perfectly with Lexington’s goal of fostering excellence both on and off the court.
Community leaders and parents alike anticipate that Thompson’s arrival will invigorate the program, attract top local talent, and reinforce the school’s dedication to holistic athlete development.
