Liam Bowen Takes the Helm of Towson Baseball

Former UMBC Coach and 2026 America East Co‑Coach of the Year Begins New Era

A New Chapter for Towson Baseball

Liam Bowen, the 2026 America East Conference Co‑Coach of the Year, has been appointed head coach of the Towson University baseball program, succeeding the retired Matt Tyner. Bowen, who spent seven years at UMBC, becomes the fourth coach since the program moved to Division I in 1980.

Bowen’s arrival marks a strategic shift for Towson, a program seeking to rebuild after a lengthy coaching turnover. Athletic director Dr. Steven C. Eigenbrot expressed confidence that Bowen’s proven track record will translate into sustained competitiveness in the Colonial Athletic Association.

A Seven‑Year Reign at UMBC

During his tenure at UMBC, Bowen guided the Retrievers to three winning seasons in his final four years, including two of the program’s most successful campaigns. The team captured top‑two finishes in the America East regular‑season standings in 2023, 2024 and 2026, and posted a league‑best .292 batting average and .405 on‑base percentage in 2026.

Under Bowen’s guidance, UMBC produced nine all‑league honorees, among them pitcher Luke Johnson, a two‑time America East Pitcher of the Year who was selected by the Washington Nationals in 2024. The program’s development pipeline also yielded several players who signed professional contracts.

A Coach Rooted in Tradition

Bowen’s baseball journey began at Macalester College in Minnesota, where he played from 2003 to 2006 and earned a bachelor’s degree in history. He later obtained a master’s in business administration from the University of Maryland in 2016. Prior to Towson, he served as pitching coach at UMBC’s 2017 America East title‑winning squad, and held positions at Lincoln Memorial University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Bowen and his wife, Megan, are parents to two daughters, Clare and Alice. Their family’s deep connections to Maryland and the Mid‑Atlantic region underscore Bowen’s commitment to community engagement and recruiting local talent.

Looking Ahead

As the new head coach, Bowen inherits a roster poised to contend, bolstered by recent draft successes and a strong developmental foundation. His blend of analytical acumen, player‑centric philosophy, and experience in high‑stakes conference play positions Towson to aim for its first NCAA tournament appearance in program history.
