Mike McLaughlin, the head coach of the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, recently announced the addition of Liam Shanahan to his coaching staff, a move that underscores the program’s commitment to depth and regional talent.
A Homegrown Coach Returns to Philadelphia
Shanahan, a Philadelphia native who starred at Masterman High School before embarking on a collegiate career at the University of Pittsburgh, brings a blend of playing experience and administrative acumen to Penn.
His most recent role as a graduate assistant at Indiana University contributed to the Hoosiers’ Big Ten regular‑season championship in 2023, where he oversaw film analysis, skill development drills, and logistical support for the team.
Prior to that, Shanahan served as co‑head manager for the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball program, coordinating practice plans, travel arrangements, and equipment needs while completing a master's degree in public affairs.
A 2023 graduate with dual bachelor's degrees in economics and political science and a minor in American history, Shanahan expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the Philadelphia basketball community and contributing to the Quakers' pursuit of excellence.
Mike McLaughlin highlighted Shanahan’s local roots and professional versatility, noting that his familiarity with the city’s basketball culture will enrich the program both on and off the court.
