Liam Smith, a senior running back and linebacker at Oak Park and River Forest High School, has emerged as the face of a program that has struggled to find consistency in recent seasons. After a standout year that saw him amass 906 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, Smith is now focused on translating that performance into tangible wins for the Huskies.
The team’s history is marked by missed playoff opportunities, including a drought that began after the 2018 postseason and a winless home record last year. Smith acknowledges the weight of that legacy but remains confident that the current roster, bolstered by fresh talent, can rewrite the narrative.
Coach John Hoerster has voiced optimism about the influx of young players, noting that their energy has reinvigorated daily practices and team chemistry. The Smith brothers, Liam and Timmy, will share the field this fall, adding a familial dynamic that could prove pivotal in tight games.
Health has also been a major factor in Smith’s preparation. A spleen laceration sidelined him during the previous basketball season, but medical clearance now allows him to return to full strength, raising expectations for a more aggressive offensive scheme.
The schedule presents both challenges and opportunities. With the first three games slated for home turf, Smith has circled the matchup against defending Class 6A champion Fenwick as a marquee test. The recent expansion of playoff spots by the IHSA further fuels his belief that the Huskies can secure a postseason berth if they maintain momentum.
