Veteran net‑minder Andrei Vasilevskiy, the two‑time Vezina Trophy winner affectionately known as the Big Cat, returned to the ice this summer not to play, but to teach.
A Summer of Mentorship
During the Tampa Bay Lightning Youth Goalie Camp, the Russian star spent days on the bench, offering pointers on positioning, footwork and the subtle art of reading shooters.
His presence drew dozens of youngsters from across Florida, many of whom had only ever seen him on television.
Aiden Smith, a 14‑year‑old from Tampa, called Vasilevskiy his idol and said the camp had sparked a dream of one day wearing an NHL jersey.
Learning from the Legend
The sessions focused on technical details, such as how Vasilevskiy’s height gives him a unique angle on the puck and how he anticipates rebounds.
The camp also highlighted the growing visibility of youth hockey in the state, with the Lightning organization and local media broadcasting the event on social platforms.
Beyond the drills, the goalie expressed hope that the memories would stay with the participants for a lifetime, encouraging them to pursue the sport with passion.
Vasilevskiy’s own season will resume on September 20 when the Lightning open the preseason against the Nashville Predators at Benchmark International Arena.
