A timeline of transformation
The renovation of Lindsey Nelson Stadium, home to the University of Tennessee Volunteers baseball team, began in November 2023 with a budget of $95.8 million that later rose to $105.1 million. Crews have worked through two playing seasons, finishing the bulk of the work ahead of schedule.
The most visible changes include a new third tier of seating, expanded standing‑room areas and a modernized sound system. The stadium now accommodates more than 8,000 fans, up from roughly 6,300, and features upgraded restrooms, elevators, a fresh turf field and LED lighting that meet contemporary standards.
While the structural upgrades are complete, a handful of details remain unfinished. The left‑field entrance plaza, new coach and player entrances, and a paved sidewalk along Pat Head Summitt Road are slated for completion by September 5, 2026, just before the Volunteers’ first football game, with coach offices and the player’s entrance expected by mid‑October.
Final touches on the left‑field plaza
Construction crews plan to finish the plaza by early September, ensuring that the entrance behind home plate is fully operational for the upcoming season. The project includes a permanent cement surface, brick posts and signage for the porch gate, creating a welcoming gateway that links the stadium to Todd Helton Drive.
The upgrades have already translated into a more comfortable environment for players and spectators alike, with improved accessibility and expanded amenities. Fans can expect a smoother flow from the main concourse to their seats, and the added suites and club spaces offer new options for corporate guests.
University officials anticipate that once the remaining work is completed, the stadium will be ready to host the 2027 baseball season with all facilities meeting modern expectations, reinforcing the Volunteers’ competitive edge and enhancing the overall game‑day experience for the Knoxville community.
