The Detroit Lions have added veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs on a one‑year contract worth $1.425 million, with $475,000 guaranteed, to replace Teddy Bridgewater, who unexpectedly left the team.
A Calculated Gamble for Detroit
Bridgewater, a 33‑year‑old who spent 11 seasons in the NFL, finished his career with 15,182 passing yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions, and his departure follows a brief 2024 comeback that may prove permanent.
Dobbs, a fourth‑round selection in 2017, has compiled 3,346 passing yards, 17 scores and 15 interceptions in 15 career starts while also contributing 515 rushing yards and eight touchdowns; he previously suited up for the Steelers, Titans, Cardinals, Vikings, 49ers and Patriots, and even spent time on Detroit’s practice squad in 2022.
The move is intended to give starter Jared Goff a reliable backup as the Lions gear up for a preseason slate that includes matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 13, the Washington Commanders on Aug. 22 and the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 29.
Coaches say the signing adds depth and experience to a young quarterback room, and the organization hopes Dobbs can help keep the offense humming while Goff rests.
