Zach Boren, a Devils Lake native who spent three seasons in the North American Hockey League, announced his commitment to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he will join a program that captured the ACHA Division I national championship in 2025.
A Program on the Rise
UNLV’s hockey squad, long regarded as one of the premier teams in the ACHA, blends seasoned veterans with fresh talent, and Boren’s leadership as a former captain of the Watertown Shamrocks, where he tallied 57 points in his final season, is expected to add depth and experience.
Joining him on the track side of the local sports scene, Tyler Cree‑Beglau, a senior at Dakota Prairie High School, has pledged to continue his athletic career at Northern State University, focusing on the triple jump.
Cree‑Beglau’s recent state meet performance was nothing short of spectacular; he won the event with a personal‑best mark of 45 feet 11.75 inches, a jump that also highlighted his role as a starter on the Nelson County basketball team that advanced to the state tournament.
New Coaching Landscape
The baseball program at Lake Region State College will enter a new era after longtime coach Steve Anderson announced his resignation following two seasons at the helm, a move that opens the door for fresh leadership in the clubhouse.
Meanwhile, Suri Gourd, a junior at Four Winds, received a second scholarship offer from Black Hills State University for basketball, building on an earlier recruitment from the University of Mary; Gourd is slated to visit two additional campuses before making a final decision.
These commitments and transitions reflect a vibrant regional sports ecosystem where emerging athletes are aligning with collegiate programs that promise competitive play and academic opportunity, while coaching changes signal evolving strategies for local teams.
