Two teams from the Upstate Elite Soccer Academy in Syracuse have captured the State Cup, earning the right to fly the central New York flag at the U.S. National tournament in Salt Lake City this July.
The clubs, fielded in the 2011 and 2012 age groups, are the culmination of a program built by former professional player Gale Agbossoumonde, who launched the academy after hanging up his boots.
Players describe the squad as a family, having bonded over two and a half years and sharing roots in Onondaga, Oswego, Madison and Tompkins counties.
A Family Forged on the Pitch
Team captain Micah Awoke, a senior from the 2012 side, says the group’s work ethic and camaraderie have been the driving forces behind their State Cup triumph.
Olivier Payne, captain of the 2011 squad and a rising sophomore at Nottingham High School, adds that the experience feels like a dream, especially with the eyes of the FIFA World Cup watching.
Coach Chris Brennan has praised the dedication of the youngsters, noting that their commitment goes beyond talent and reflects a collective hunger to succeed.
The players draw inspiration from the world’s biggest soccer showcase, with many already predicting that France will lift the trophy in the upcoming tournament.
Beyond the on‑field ambitions, the club is seeking sponsors and donations to offset the travel costs of taking their families to Utah, a hurdle that has not dampened their resolve.
