A Family Legacy Continues
Londyn Sommerville, a 6‑foot‑3 guard from Richwoods High School in Peoria, Illinois, announced her commitment to Creighton University on Wednesday, choosing the Bluejays over a handful of other programs.
Her decision comes after a junior season in which she helped her team to a 24‑5 record, earned All‑Big 12 honors and guided the squad to a Sweet 16 finish in the IHSA Class 4A postseason.
Sommerville said she was courted by Bradley, Florida Atlantic, Tulane, Tulsa and Florida Gulf Coast before settling on Creighton, a program that aligns with her academic and athletic goals.
The commitment adds to a dynasty that runs deep in her family. Her brother, Lathan Sommerville, currently plays for the Washington Huskies, while her father, Marcellus Sommerville, was a key member of Bradley’s 2006 NCAA Sweet 16 run.
Marcellus Sommerville, who starred on that historic Bradley team, described the family’s basketball lineage as “very rewarding,” noting that the sport has been a constant thread through three generations.
Her mother, Brooke Petty Sommerville, also left her mark on the court, having played at Peoria High, Illinois Central College and Illinois State University, while her grandfather, Gene Petty, was an all‑city basketball player at Manual and a standout baseball kicker who once signed with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
Dave Eminian, a longtime reporter covering high school sports in the Peoria area, has chronicled the Sommerville family’s journey and said the upcoming college chapter is being watched closely by local fans.
