The Longwood University field hockey team saw its season slip away on Saturday as Queens University edged the Lancers 3-1 in a tightly contested match.
Key Moments
Queens struck first in the 23rd minute of the second quarter when Grace Wagner found the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Lancers, however, kept the pressure on, with sophomore goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk making 11 saves to keep the game within reach.
The second half unfolded as a flurry of chances for Queens, who added two more goals through Delfina Gonzalez and Olivia Gains, pushing the margin to 3-0. Longwood’s fortunes shifted when Channy Johnson struck in the third quarter, assisted by Meghan Hyatt, cutting the deficit to one.
Despite being outshot 21-19 over the course of the game, Longwood generated more penalty corners, 11 to Queens’ eight, and dominated possession in the final period, outshooting Queens 7-3 in the third quarter alone. A late strike by Liv Rainwater with 4:35 left sealed the 3-1 final score.
The Lancers will look to rebound when they travel to face William & Mary on September 4 at 5 p.m., hoping to translate their late‑game resilience into a win.
