Longwood University appoints veteran coach Donovan Williams as new assistant

Williams brings over a decade of coaching experience and a track record of NCAA tournament success

Longwood University announced Tuesday that Donovan Williams will join the Lancers' men's basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing a wealth of experience from a career that spans more than ten years across several Division I programs.

A proven postseason architect

Williams' tenure has been marked by deep tournament runs, most notably his contribution to the 2022 Lancers campaign that culminated in a 26‑win season and a 14‑seed in the NCAA tournament.

Prior to his latest role, he served as an assistant at Oral Roberts, where he helped the Bulls to a 25‑8 record in his first year, and earlier contributed to the success of South Florida, Cornell, Princeton, Lafayette and Georgia Tech, each time boosting win totals and advancing teams to postseason competition.

Before moving into coaching, Williams was a four‑year letterwinner at Park University, leading the NAIA Sweet 16 run in 2007 and earning a bachelor's degree in business administration; he later completed a master's in sports administration at Georgia State in 2010.

University athletic director Ronnie Thomas praised the hire, saying Williams' blend of strategic acumen and player development will strengthen the program as it seeks to build on recent momentum.
