Lonnie White Jr. grew up in Pennsylvania as a three‑sport standout, excelling on the gridiron, the basketball court and the baseball diamond. His talent on the field earned him a spot in the Penn State recruiting class, but the lure of professional baseball proved irresistible when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 2021 MLB Draft.
A dual‑sport crossroads
Though he also received scholarship offers from powerhouse programs such as Rutgers, Michigan and Georgia Tech, White chose to sign with the Pirates, a decision rooted in a lifelong passion for baseball. The transition was not without setbacks; a series of injuries between 2021 and 2024 limited his playing time, but whenever he took the field his performance spoke for itself.
After a strong showing in High‑A Greensboro, where he batted .298, White earned a promotion to the Altoona Curve on April 30. In Double‑A he is now hitting .283 and celebrated his first home run at that level on May 6, underscoring his rapid ascent within the organization.
Off the field, White maintains a connection with his former college coach, James Franklin, and often speaks about the values he learned in State College. He says the discipline and teamwork cultivated at Penn State continue to shape his approach to the minor leagues.
