A New Chapter for the MAC-SBC Challenge
The Mid-American Conference and Sun Belt Conference have formalized a scheduling alliance that pairs their men's and women's basketball programs each season. Originally launched in 2023‑24 at the suggestion of Sun Belt strategic planners, the partnership has now been secured through the 2028‑29 season, ensuring a steady rotation of cross‑conference matchups that are broadcast on ESPN platforms.
The inaugural slate for the 2026‑27 campaign was announced recently, with the first round of games slated for November 2. Louisiana Tech's men's team will host Kent State at the Thomas Assembly Center, while the Lady Techsters travel to Toledo to face the Rockets. Both contests represent the Bulldogs' debut as the newest member of the Sun Belt Conference and mark the first meeting between Louisiana Tech and Kent State since 1983.
Louisiana Tech's Historic Debut
Louisiana Tech enters the challenge with a rich but relatively recent history against the Golden Flashes. The Bulldogs hold a 2‑0 edge in the all‑time series, having defeated Kent State 75‑66 in 1981 and 60‑55 in 1983. This season's matchup will be the third meeting overall and the first in more than four decades, adding a narrative layer to a series that has long been dormant.
Both programs arrive with momentum from their respective conference tournaments. The Lady Techsters fell short in the Conference USA Championship against Kennesaw State, while the Rockets finished the 2025‑26 season with 24 wins before bowing to Akron in the MAC Semifinals. Each team will carry a 20‑win campaign into the challenge, setting the tone for competitive contests.
The scheduling model guarantees each participant one home and one away game per season, with the second round of pairings to be released in January. Tip times and broadcast details will follow, but fans can already anticipate that every MAC‑SBC Challenge game will be carried on an ESPN platform, amplifying the visibility of both conferences.
Beyond the opening night, the alliance reflects a broader strategy to deepen regional rivalries and provide additional scheduling stability for schools navigating realignment. As the partnership moves into its fifth year, the MAC and Sun Belt will continue to alternate host sites, ensuring that each program experiences a balanced mix of travel and home‑court advantage.
