A wave of improvement is sweeping through Lannan Park in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood, where local leaders have begun a comprehensive renovation of the baseball fields that serve the Portland Youth League. The upgrades include cleaning dugouts, repairing lights, reinforcing bleachers, redoing fencing and installing new concession equipment, all aimed at creating a safer, more inviting space for young athletes.
A Long‑Standing Community Hub
The Portland Youth League has called the park home since 1983, but years of wear, occasional encampments and lingering debris have made the fields less than ideal for the dozens of children who gather each season. Past conditions forced families to navigate unsanitary surroundings, prompting calls for a thorough overhaul that could restore the park’s role as a cornerstone of neighborhood recreation.
Joey Hightower, who grew up playing in those same dugouts, now serves as the league’s president. He recalls the excitement of his own childhood games and is determined to recreate that experience for a new generation, emphasizing that the park should remain a safe, community‑focused gathering place for families across the area.
His vision received a boost from Mike Mulrooney of Shirley’s Way, who donated a new refrigerator and ice machine for the concession stand. The contribution is part of a broader set of upgrades that also include repaired lighting, upgraded bleachers and fresh fencing, all intended to make the facilities comparable to those found in more established leagues.
Organizers hope the improvements will be ready before the spring season, a timeline that aligns with the registration of roughly 130 children already signed up, with plans to sponsor up to 150 kids next year. The sponsorship initiative seeks to remove financial barriers and encourage broader participation among local youth.
Beyond the physical upgrades, the project aims to cement Lannan Park’s role as a lasting asset for the community. By addressing past challenges and providing modern, well‑maintained fields, the renovation promises to foster a new era of youth sports in Portland, reinforcing the neighborhood’s reputation as a place where families can gather around shared athletic passions.
