A New Face in Baton Rouge
Will Wade, the head coach of the LSU men's basketball program, confirmed that guard Austin Nunez has officially signed with the Tigers and is now on campus for the 2026‑27 season. The announcement was made during a recent press conference, where Wade emphasized the player's readiness to contribute immediately.
Nunez arrives after a season with the UTSA Roadrunners in which he posted averages of 9.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists. His statistical line reflects a player who has already navigated the pressures of Division I competition, bringing a blend of scoring and playmaking to the Tigers' lineup.
Family Legacy and Early Promise
The guard's mother, eight‑time track and field All‑American Tameka Robert‑Nunez, has a strong athletic pedigree that appears to have influenced his competitive drive. Growing up in a household that prized both basketball and track, Nunez developed a work ethic that coaches say is evident in his on‑court decision‑making.
Before reaching the collegiate level, Nunez was a standout at the high school ranks, earning a four‑star rating and being named a McDonald’s All‑American nominee. He capped his senior season with a 28.5‑point per game average, while also collecting TABC Class 6A All‑State honors and being crowned the San Antonio Express News’ Alamo High School Sports Player of the Year in 2022.
A Journey Through Multiple Programs
Nunez's college career has taken him through several institutions. He began at Arizona State, later transferred to Ole Miss, and most recently completed a stint at UTSA. Each stop has offered him different challenges, culminating in a memorable 22‑point performance against Florida Atlantic where he shot 7‑of‑12 from the field and 7‑of‑8 from the free‑throw line.
Coach Wade praised the guard's basketball IQ, noting that Nunez's experience across varied systems has equipped him with a situational awareness that is rare for a player at his stage. "He brings a level of poise and understanding of game dynamics that will complement our existing core," Wade said.
The addition of Nunez is expected to deepen LSU's backcourt options as the Tigers look to build on recent successes. With his proven scoring ability, playmaking skills, and a background rooted in both academic and athletic excellence, the team anticipates a smooth integration and a competitive edge in the upcoming season.
