A Season in Peril
The LSU baseball team is on the brink of missing the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011, a drought that would mark a historic low for the program. The Tigers have dropped 18 games in SEC play, matching the most conference defeats in school history.
Injuries have compounded the problem, sidelining pivotal players such as Jake Brown, Chris Stanfield and Cooper Moore. The roster’s depth has been stripped, forcing the team to rely on younger talent while the pitching staff searches for stability.
Veteran pitchers William Schmidt and Casan Evans have posted subpar ERAs this season, leaving the rotation without a reliable anchor. Their struggles have heightened the urgency for the coaching staff to find viable replacements before the postseason window closes.
Adding to the uncertainty, center fielder Derek Curiel, shortstop Steven Milam and right‑fielder Jake Brown are expected to sign professional contracts after the MLB draft in July, further thinning the lineup.
Head coach Jay Johnson has publicly urged the remaining roster to step up, emphasizing that the team must tighten its pitching and fill the void left by departing stars if it hopes to salvage a postseason berth.
