LSU’s baseball program is celebrating a major milestone after the 2026 MLB Draft, where the Tigers managed to keep 16 of the 22 players they had originally signed. Coach Jay Johnson, who has been guiding the team for several seasons, used the moment to reflect on the quality of the incoming class and the strategic value of retaining so many commitments.
Among the retained players, two names have already generated buzz: Dominic Santarelli and Malachi Washington. Both athletes chose LSU over other suitors, citing the program’s development path and the chance to contribute early.
Standout Performances
Santarelli’s showing at the MLB Draft combine was eye‑catching; he smashed seven balls beyond 114 miles per hour using a wood bat, a benchmark that scouts have noted as rare.
Washington, described as an athletic power hitter with elite speed, brings a blend of raw power and quickness that could reshape the Tigers’ batting order.
The coaching staff also pointed to a deep stable of left‑handed pitchers, naming Cooper Williams, Ethan Plog and Danny Lachenmayer as core pieces who will anchor the rotation.
Adding versatility, two‑way player Lucas Nawrocki will split time between the outfield and the mound, giving the team flexibility in both defensive and offensive alignments.
Right‑handed arms Coleton Brady, Cooper Sides and Kolby Stringer are slated to start midweek games, providing depth and fresh arms when the weekend rotation rests.
Other position players rounding out the class include shortstop Parker Loew, praised for his elite defensive range, and Jordan Martinez, a power hitter with strong defensive instincts. Left‑handed hitters Luke Tucker and Dylan Minnatee will add further depth at infield and first base, while Tre Morgan contributes additional skill sets across the roster.
