A Strategic Overhaul
LSU’s basketball program is undergoing a pronounced transformation as head coach Will Wade prepares the roster for the 2026‑27 campaign, targeting veteran transfers, former professionals and international talent to accelerate its return to SEC contention.
At the center of this reshuffle is 22‑year‑old forward Saliou Niang, an Italian prospect who has already drawn attention for his size, athleticism and efficiency around the basket.
Niang spent the most recent season with Virtus Bologna in the EuroLeague, where he averaged 7.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 60.8 % inside the paint.
Though he was selected 58th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft and never signed an NBA contract, Niang remains a raw but gifted talent, capable of defending multiple positions and handling the ball at his stature.
He moves well laterally on defense, can switch onto multiple positions and displays fluidity in transition, traits that align with Wade’s emphasis on energy and physicality.
Eligibility Awaits
Niang has not yet signed with LSU and is still awaiting eligibility clearance, a process that could see him join the Tigers for the upcoming season if all requirements are met.
Wade’s aggressive recruitment strategy reflects a broader ambition to blend seasoned experience with high‑upside international prospects, a formula he believes can fast‑track the program back to the top of the SEC.
