Governor Jeff Landry announced that the United States and Louisiana State flags will be lowered to half-staff on Monday and Tuesday in tribute to Skip Bertman, the legendary LSU baseball coach who passed away at 88 after a brief hospitalization for heart-related complications.
A Nationwide Tribute
The directive applies to all state and federal buildings in Louisiana and across the country, underscoring the breadth of respect for a man who reshaped college baseball.
Bertman took over the LSU program in 1983, when it was considered an afterthought, and within 18 years guided the Tigers to five national titles by 2001, turning the team into a perennial powerhouse.
The Architect of a Dynasty
His meticulous approach, emphasis on discipline, and ability to attract top talent forged a culture that produced dozens of Major League players and set a new standard for collegiate baseball excellence.
A Celebration of Life
A public memorial will be held Tuesday evening at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, beginning with a private ceremony at 4:30 p.m. followed by the main tribute at 7 p.m.
The event will be streamed live on ESPN+, the LSU Sports YouTube channel, and on Facebook, allowing fans worldwide to join the remembrance.
Governor Landry, in his remarks, highlighted Bertman’s influence that extends beyond the diamond, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and coaches.
