Historic advantage
LSU’s women’s soccer squad, currently ranked No. 16 in the nation, will open its 2026 campaign at home against Northwestern State on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. CT in the LSU Soccer Stadium. The matchup marks the first meeting of the season and continues a series that has favored the Tigers, who hold a 5‑0‑1 record against the Lady Demons.
Both programs entered the season with defeats in their openers — LSU fell 2‑0 to Wake Forest, while Northwestern State absorbed a nine‑goal loss to Oklahoma — but the Tigers hope to translate early lessons into a stronger showing against a Northwestern State team that finished 13‑5‑3 a year ago and reached the Southland Conference semifinals.
New faces and watchlist recognition
Key contributors for LSU include senior forward Ava Galligan, who topped the 2025 roster with 11 goals and four assists and earned First Team All‑SEC honors, and fifth‑year forward Allie Fryer, a transfer from BYU who brings 30 career goals and postseason experience. Returning veterans such as Kelsey Major and Sariyah Bailey, both recognized on the 2025 All‑SEC teams, are expected to anchor the midfield and defense.
The preseason accolades reflect the optimism surrounding the squad: five players earned spots on the SEC Preseason Watchlist and two forwards were named to the United Soccer Coaches Hermann Trophy watchlist, underscoring the program’s growing national profile.
Looking ahead
The non‑conference slate will see the Tigers host UCF and Florida Gulf Coast before traveling to face Arizona State and Arizona, with the series concluding at home against Baylor. The next SEC showdown is slated for Sept. 11 against Tennessee, a rivalry that promises added excitement for fans.
