A Summer of Opportunity
The Cape Cod League has long served as a proving ground for college standouts, and this summer the league is buzzing with LSU alumni who are turning heads with both their offensive and defensive performances.
Santiago Garcia and Gavin Guidry recently found themselves on the draft radar, each hearing their names called in the later rounds by MLB clubs. Their selections underscore the continued pipeline of talent emerging from Baton Rouge.
Among the position players, Dawson Park has emerged as a defensive standout for the Cotuit Kettleers. Batting .286 and stealing six bases, Park also boasts a clean record at second base on the left side of the infield, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by coaching staff.
Bino Watters, competing for the Chatham Anglers, mirrors Park’s batting average at .286 while adding a league‑leading seven stolen bases. Though he endured a rough offensive stretch recently, his overall summer remains solid, and his speed continues to create havoc on the bases.
Jason Wachs, patrolling center field for the Wareham Gatemen, has appeared in 20 games and is drawing extended evaluation for a potential fall‑season role. His .208 average pairs with a .360 on‑base percentage, reflecting a patient approach at the plate.
Cade Kurland has been perhaps the most dynamic of the group, raising his batting average nearly 60 points over the past week and maintaining a flawless .000 error rate across 67 chances at second base. His .365 on‑base percentage highlights a disciplined hitting style.
Coach Johnson’s Praise
LSU’s own Jay Johnson has publicly lauded the progress of several of his former charges, especially noting Park’s defensive reliability and Watters’ base‑stealing threat. Johnson’s comments suggest that the league’s competitive environment is accelerating their development ahead of the next professional chapter.
The excitement is building toward the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, scheduled for this weekend. Several of the aforementioned players have earned selections, promising a showcase that will further illuminate the talent emerging from LSU’s baseball program.
