A new era for LSU football
The 2026 season will begin with a showdown against Clemson on September 5, marking the first game under new head coach Lane Kiffin. The excitement in Baton Rouge is palpable as the program embraces a bold new direction.
Kiffin arrived with a plan to overhaul the roster, bringing in 40 transfers and a highly touted recruiting class. While the offensive overhaul is his hallmark, the coaching staff also retained defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who proved his ability to revitalize the unit last season.
The defense returns several key pieces, including linebacker Whit Weeks, who overcame injury to rejoin the squad, and safety Tamarcus Cooley, a starter in all 13 games last year. Their presence provides a foundation for a unit that still seeks consistency.
Among the newcomers, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen stands out after a breakout 2025 campaign, while cornerbacks DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland bring experience and playmaking ability. The secondary also welcomes Dashawn Spears, who is expected to start alongside Cooley.
The defensive line features talent such as Dom McKinley, as well as freshmen Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson, though the group lacks extensive game experience. Despite the uncertainties, the coaching staff remains confident in the depth and potential of the unit.
