LSU’s Special Teams Faces Crucial Overhaul Ahead of 2026 Season

With new coordinators and key departures, the Tigers must rebuild return and kicking units

LSU’s football program is turning its attention to a critical area that has defined its recent performance: special teams.

When Lane Kiffin took over the program, he brought in Joe Houston to serve as the special teams coordinator, a move that signals a fresh approach to a unit that has seen both promise and inconsistency.

The good news for the Tigers is that several key contributors are set to return. Grant Chadwick and Silas Hall will again handle the return and punt duties, providing continuity and experience.

At kicker, the team has secured Scott Starzyk, who transferred from Arkansas, to fill the place‑kicking role. His spring performance, especially on kicks inside 40 yards, has already drawn praise from coaches.

A New Era of Coordination

The departure of Aeron Burrell, who handled kickoffs last season, left a void that the staff is addressing. Aidan Corbello, along with freshmen Gavin Higgins and Sean Perret, are among the candidates to step into that responsibility.

Return duties also face a reshuffle. With several players moving on to the NFL, Eugene Wilson III and Winston Watkins are expected to battle for the punt return spot, while Jayce Brown, Harlem Berry and Caden Durham are in the mix for kickoff returns.

Coaching staff remains optimistic that the combination of returning starters and new talent will create a more stable and effective unit heading into the 2026 campaign.
