A New Chapter for the Finnish Winger
Luka Arkko, a 6‑foot‑4, 230‑pound forward from Lahti, Finland, was selected in the second round of the 2026 NHL entry draft by the Detroit Red Wings. The team highlighted his size and physical style, traits that have defined his game since his junior days with the Lahti Pelicans U20 side.
After the draft, Arkko’s rights were acquired by the OHL’s Erie Otters in the CHL’s import draft, a move that gives the club a chance to inject scoring depth and a rugged presence into their lineup. The Otters’ management believes the Finnish winger can translate his offensive instincts into North American ice.
Red Wings director of player development Dan Cleary has already spoken to Arkko, urging him to study the trajectory of Emmitt Finnie, a late‑round pick who carved out a successful NHL career. Cleary sees a similar path for Arkko, who posted 25 points in his draft‑minus‑one season and added six goals with five assists at the international junior level.
Currently, Arkko is taking part in the Red Wings’ prospect development camp, where he is working on skating efficiency and shot selection. The organization is optimistic that his blend of size, work ethic and offensive upside will eventually produce a reliable scorer.
The Erie Otters, eager to bolster their attack, view Arkko as a key piece in a roster that aims to compete for a championship. By pairing his physical play with a willingness to drive the net, the team hopes to create more scoring chances for its veteran forwards.
Looking Forward
If Arkko can adapt to the North American style and maintain his development curve, he could become the next late‑round success story that the Red Wings cherish. The coming months will be a crucial test of his readiness for professional competition.
