Luke Mattson is set to rejoin Northern Michigan University for the 2026‑27 season as an assistant coach, marking his second tenure with the Wildcats. His return follows a successful stint in which he helped the team to a 22‑11 record, captured a GLIAC championship and guided the program to back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances.
A Familiar Face Returns to the Wildcats
Mattson’s basketball journey began in the Upper Peninsula, where he starred at Negaunee High School before moving on to Bay Community College and Finlandia University. He capped his collegiate career as team captain in his final two seasons at Finlandia, laying the groundwork for a coaching path that would span several levels of the game.
His coaching résumé includes stints at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration, and years leading AAU programs such as the 14U and 16U Great Northern Elite teams. Under his guidance, players like Trevor Nolan helped the Great Northern Elite Mustangs secure the 2023 MHSAA state championship, showcasing his ability to develop talent at the grassroots level.
During his previous tenure at NMU, Mattson was instrumental in orchestrating a 13‑game winning streak — the longest in program history — while also mentoring athletes who went on to professional opportunities. His blend of playing experience, academic credentials and proven recruiting acumen positions him as a key figure in the Wildcats’ pursuit of continued excellence.
