Luke Mattson is back at Northern Michigan University, this time in the role of assistant coach, bringing a blend of playing experience, coaching acumen and deep community roots that have long defined his career.
A Proven Record of Success
Just a year ago Mattson helped the Wildcats to a 22‑11 season, captured the GLIAC regular‑season championship and secured a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The team rattled off 13 straight wins, tying the program’s longest streak, a testament to his ability to energize a squad.
His coaching journey began at Bay Community College, where he compiled a 39‑20 record and earned two conference titles. He later coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State before returning to the Upper Peninsula, where he captained Finlandia University’s Lions and earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.
In the AAU circuit he led the Great Northern Elite teams, developing talent from the region and guiding notable players such as Trevor Nolan, who helped the Mustangs win the 2023 MHSAA state championship.
Head coach Keil Ganz welcomed the hire, emphasizing Mattson’s familiarity with the area and his proven track record in player development as key factors for the program’s next chapter.
