A Familiar Face Returns
Northern Michigan University announced this week that Luke Mattson will return to the program as an assistant coach, marking his second tenure with the Wildcats. Mattson previously served as an assistant during the 2023‑24 season and helped guide the team to a 22‑11 record, an outright GLIAC regular‑season title and a run to the NCAA Midwest Regional Quarterfinals.
His return follows a period of growth that saw him coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State and lead three AAU teams in the Upper Peninsula. Known for his ability to develop talent, Mattson has cultivated players from the region, most notably Munising standout Trevor Nolan, who captained the 2023 MHSAA state‑championship Mustangs.
Mattson’s playing career began at Negaunee High School before he transferred to Bay Community College, where he started 23 games as a sophomore and helped the Norse to a 39‑20 record and two conference championships. He later completed his eligibility at Finlandia University, capping his collegiate experience with 45 appearances and serving as team captain in his final two seasons.
Beyond the court, Mattson holds an associate degree in business from Bay Community College (2020) and a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Finlandia University (2023). His academic background, combined with his deep ties to the Upper Peninsula, equips him to connect with recruits and families throughout the region.
Athletic Director Keil Ganz emphasized that Mattson’s local knowledge and proven recruiting network make him an invaluable asset as the program looks to sustain its recent momentum. "Luke understands the landscape of Upper Peninsula basketball better than anyone, and his commitment to player development will continue to elevate our program," Ganz said in the announcement.
