Luke Roth, a 25‑year‑old former college baseball player, has been appointed head coach of the Knappa Loggers, taking the reins of a program that has struggled to find its footing in recent seasons.
A Fresh Perspective for the Loggers
Roth graduated from Clatskanie High School in 2019 before continuing his baseball career at Midland University and later at Oregon Tech, where he honed his skills as both a pitcher and a student of the game.
The Loggers endured a tough 2026 campaign, finishing 10‑14 overall and fourth in the 2A/1A Special District 1, a result that left the roster thin on senior leadership.
Roth believes that revitalizing the program starts with rekindling enthusiasm among the returning seniors and encouraging the younger players who will carry the team forward.
He credits Clatskanie head coach Ryan Tompkins for shaping his coaching outlook, and he has maintained a relationship with former Loggers coach Jeff Miller, who stepped down after 24 years and four state championships.
Roth’s coaching philosophy centers on individualized player development, aiming to grow athletes both on the field and in their personal lives.
He will be joined by Tim Miller, who served as interim coach last season, as his assistant, while Athletic Director Jenny Smith expressed confidence that Roth’s blend of experience and fresh ideas will restore the Loggers to competitiveness.
The hiring marks a pivotal moment for Knappa baseball, as the community looks to a new generation of leadership to rebuild a tradition of excellence.
