Family Legacy Fuels Ambition
Luke Thompson, a freshman at the University of Tennessee, has announced a positional change that could reshape the Volunteers' receiving corps. After arriving on campus as a safety, Thompson will now line up as a wide receiver, wearing jersey number 85.
The transition leverages Thompson's high‑school pedigree as a two‑way standout who excelled at both wide receiver and safety. He capped his prep career by posting a 10.59‑second 100‑meter dash at the Class AAA track championships, a speed that coaches say translates well to the open field.
Ranked No. 53 among the 2026 recruiting class by 247Sports, Thompson arrives with a blend of athleticism and experience that the program values.
Beyond his own achievements, Thompson's family tree is steeped in Tennessee football tradition. His mother, Sharon Thompson, earned All‑American honors and secured SEC championships in cross country and track while competing for the Volunteers. His father, Kevin Thompson, was a decathlete and walk‑on wide receiver for the same program, and his grandfather, Joe Thompson, also wore the orange and white as a wide receiver.
Thompson's move to wide receiver adds depth to Tennessee's receiver position, providing the team with additional options as the season progresses.
