The Lynnville-Sully baseball team held onto first place in the South Iowa Cedar League after a 6-5 victory over Colfax-Mingo, a win highlighted by a decisive three-run burst in the sixth inning.
A Comeback for the Ages
The Hawks found themselves trailing early, but a combination of patient at-bats and opportunistic baserunning turned the tide. Wyatt Jay, one of the Tigerhawks' top arms, limited the Hawks to three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, yet the Hawks' late surge proved decisive.
Brody Borg provided the spark with a two-run double that pushed the lead ahead, while Dylan Rea added a bloop single that drove in another run. Their contributions were complemented by solid defensive work from the infield and outfield, with veteran Scott Alberts and coach Brian Warrick praising the collective effort that also saw key contributions from Henry Sharp, Maverick Harter, Gavin Olea, and Royal Collins.
Rising Talent on the Mound
Freshman left-hander Carsen Kottenstette made his varsity debut on the mound, logging five innings and showing poise beyond his years. Though the team managed only two hits, his performance kept the game within reach and signaled a promising future for the pitching staff.
Relief pitcher JD Richards closed the game with a flawless 1 1/3 innings, allowing no runs and no hits, preserving the narrow margin and underscoring the depth of the bullpen.
Building Momentum
The victory marked the latest in a series of strong outings for the Hawks, who had previously posted a 15-3 win over North Mahaska and a 17-7 triumph over Iowa Valley. A 15-game winning streak against North Mahaska since 2009 underscores the program’s consistency, while standout performances from players like Brody Borg — who leads the team with eight doubles and a .526 average — signal continued growth. The depth chart also features Fisher Grove, Kyle Wood, Jordan Dunsbergen, Connor Deal, Wyatt Mathis, Colton Alberts, Alex Teed, and Tyler Routier, who continue to push the varsity squad forward.
