A season of brilliance
The South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) recently unveiled its postseason all‑conference teams, spotlighting a group of standout athletes who helped shape a memorable year for the league.
At the heart of the celebration are the Lynnville‑Sully Hawks, who captured the conference title with a dominant 14‑1 record and finished the season at 25‑4 overall. Their success was driven by a blend of seasoned leadership and emerging talent.
JD Richards anchored the infield with a .511 batting average, ranking sixth in the league, and posted a .629 on‑base percentage that placed him among the most reliable hitters. His combination of contact hitting and plate discipline made him a cornerstone of the lineup.
Pitcher Brody Borg proved equally formidable, posting a microscopic .69 earned run average that ranked fourth league‑wide. Over 20 ⅓ innings he logged three wins and struck out 29 batters, underscoring his dominance on the mound.
Other notable honorees
Gavin Olea earned second‑team honors as an outfielder, batting .432 and adding 18 runs, two home runs and three sacrifice flies. Carsen Kottenstette contributed a .449 average, 27 runs scored and 18 stolen bases, earning second‑team infielder recognition.
Ashton Rozendaal, the team’s catcher, posted a .359 average with 14 hits and a .490 on‑base percentage, while Wyatt Jay from Colfax‑Mingo impressed as a second‑team infielder with a .449 average and eight league doubles.
Camden Cunningham rounded out the recognitions with utility honors, ranking tenth in the league with 23 hits and 15 runs. The league also acknowledged Connor Deal, an honorable‑mention pitcher who posted a 2.47 ERA and three victories.
The conference’s future looks bright as teams like Colfax‑Mingo, despite a 5‑11 league record, bring back young talent that could challenge the established powers in coming seasons.
